Arthur's Pass National Park Conservation Hub

Conservation-Action Future

Arthur’s Pass is the location of the South Island’s first National Park. Less than two hours drive from Christchurch it is the closest National Park by far to any New Zealand urban area. Here we explore the potential of reconnecting this amazing environment with both Canterbury locals and visitors. In particular we reimagine the village and the Department of Conservation Visitor Centre as a place to trigger a desire for first experiences in conservation activities, day walks, and overnight trips. We also consider how people travelling the West Coast highway can be configured to slowcase the great places located on our public conservation lands along the route.
