Volunteer-Tourism Futures

When people are asked what activities they do in public conservation lands they talk of walking, camping and sightseeing. Yet ask the same people about the benefits of conservation they speak of protecting the environment, preserving native species, and protecting the environment for future generations as well as the clean green image New Zealand presents internationally. In this project we imagine how a pilot mine site can join the neighbouring Paparoa National Park through the impact of people. At the site people volunteer their time and resources to help with replanting, tracking, and trapping. The design of the facilities are of a scale that not only is it made for volunteers but also by volunteering.

Punakaiki Coastal Restoration Project

In this project we imagine how a pilot mine site can join the neighbouring Paparoa National Park through the impact of people. At the site people volunteer their time and resources to help with replanting, tracking, and trapping.

Volunteer Centre

This project creates a series of staged interventions. It centers around a repurposed Volunteer Center and an on-site nursery, which are constantly being grown to invite more visitors and volunteers to participate in conservation activities, to help preserve and enhance the breeding habitat of the Tāiko Westland Petrel. This forest and coastline area is the only place in the world where they come to breed each year.
